Historoy

  Founded in August 1989, the Graduate Institute of Latin American Studies at Tamkang University is the first and the only academic research center in the field of Latin American studies in Taiwan. The Institute is devoted to the training of well-prepared people for the country and plays an important role in promoting Taiwan’s research on Latin American affairs. 
      This Institute provides a Spanish-rich environment, besides of Spanish native speaking professors, students have numerous opportunities to interact with Latin American career diplomats and journalists who always visit us during their stay in Taiwan. We offer our MA candidates intensive and varied courses in the field of Latin American Studies, including (i) law, politics, and foreign affairs, (ii) culture and society, and (iii) economics and trade. Graduates are eminently qualified to take jobs in our Minister of Foreign Affairs, as well as international business and educational organizations. Currently the faculty consists of five full-time professors, all with PhD degrees. Since 1994, this Institute has sent couples students of the second grade to the College of Humanity at Autonomy University of the State of Mexico to study aboard for one semester in the name of student exchange program. It will provide students a broader research view.
      From 2009 to 2016, the Institute and the Institute of American Studies were integrated to form the Graduate Institute of the Americas.
  Under the incumbent director Dr. Kwo-wei Kung, the Institute provides our MA students with intensive and various courses in the field of Latin American Studies, including Latin American history, philosophy, politics, international relations, economy, social issues as well as training in diplomatic and trade affairs.
